Awal Hamd Khuda Da Vird Kijey: The Divine Origin of Love
The Heer of Waris Shah begins not with a romance, but with the Creator. In these opening verses, Waris Shah establishes that Ishq (Divine Love) is the very foundation of the universe. By stating that God Himself was the first “Ashiq” (Lover) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he elevates the earthly love of Heer and Ranjha into a spiritual allegory.
Thematic Connections: The Root of Love
Section 1: God, the First Lover
اول حمد خدا دا ورد کیجے، عشق کیتا سو جگ دا مول میاں
پہلوں آپ ہی رب نے عشق کیتا ، معشوق ہے نبی رسول میاں
Awal Hamd Khuda Da Vird Kijey, Ishq Kita Su Jag Da Mol Mian
Pahlon Aap Hi Rabb Ne Ishq Kita, Mashooq Hai Nabi Rasool Mian
First, let us recite the praise of God, for Love is the very origin of this world;
First, the Lord Himself practiced Love, and the Prophet ﷺ is His Beloved.
Section 2: The Rank of the Faqir
عشق پیر فقیر دا مرتبہ اے، مرد عشق دا بھلا رنجول میاں
کھلے تنہاندے باغ قلوب اندر، جنہاں کیتا اے عشق قبول میاں
Ishq Pir Faqir Da Martaba Ae, Mard Ishq Da Bhala Ranjool Mian
Khulay Tinhanday Baagh Quloob Andar, Jinhan Kita Ae Ishq Qabool Mian
Love is the exalted station of the Pirs and Faqirs; blessed is the man afflicted by this Love;
The gardens of the heart bloom for those who have accepted the path of Ishq.
Insight: The Garden of the Heart (Quloob)
Waris Shah uses the word “Mol”—which means both the “root” and the “price.” He suggests that the price of existence is Love. By referencing the “Baagh Quloob” (Gardens of the Heart), he implies that spiritual enlightenment is an internal blossoming. Like Baba Farid’s “Akal Lateef,” Waris Shah’s “Ishq” is a transformative force that turns a simple human into a ‘Faqir’ of high rank.
