“Tum Jo Chaho To Mere Dard Ka Darmaan Ho Jayay” is a deeply spiritual and emotive ghazal by the legendary Sufi poet Bedam Shah Warsi. It reflects the soul’s total dependence on the Divine will and the intercession of the Beloved for relief from spiritual and worldly suffering. Below, you will find the Urdu text, Roman transliteration, and English translation.
Apni Hasti Ka Agar Husn Numayan Ho Jaye
Aadmi Kasrat-e-Anwar Se Hairan Ho Jaye
If the beauty of one’s own true essence were to be revealed;
Man would be left bewildered by the abundance of Divine lights.
Tum Jo Chaho To Mere Dard Ka Darmaan Ho Jaye
Warna Mushkil Hai Ke Mushkil Meri Aasaan Ho Jaye
If you so desire, my pain could find its cure;
Otherwise, it is impossible for my difficulties to be eased.
O Namak-Paash Tujhe Apni Milahat Ki Qasam
Baat To Jab Hai Ke Har Zakhm Namak-Daan Ho Jaye
O Sprinkler of Salt, I swear by your elegance and charm;
The true marvel would be if every wound itself became a salt-cellar.
Dene Wale Tujhe Dena Hai To Itna De De
Ke Mujhe Shikwa-e-Kotahi-e-Damaan Ho Jaye
O Great Giver, if You must grant, then grant me so much;
That I am left complaining only about the smallness of my apron.
Is Siyah Bakht Ki Raatein Bhi Koi Raatein Hain
Khwab-e-Rahat Bhi Jise Khwab-e-Pareshan Ho Jaye
Are the nights of this ill-fated soul even worth calling nights?
Where even a dream of comfort turns into a nightmare of distress.
Khwab Mein Bhi Nazar Aa Jain Jo Aasaar-e-Bahar
Barh Ke Daaman Se Hum-Aaghosh-e-Gareban Ho Jaye
If even in a dream the signs of spring were to appear;
My torn collar would leap forward to embrace the hem of the Beloved.
Seena-e-Shibli-o-Mansoor To Phoonka Tu Ne
Is Taraf Bhi Karam Ay Junbish-e-Damaan Ho Jaye
You ignited the hearts of Shibli and Mansoor (with Divine love);
Grant a touch of that grace here too, by a slight movement of Your hem.
Aakhri Saans Banay Zamzama Ho Apna
Saaz-e-Mizraab-e-Fana Taar-e-Rag-e-Jaan Ho Jaye
May my final breath become a melodic song of praise;
The plectrum of extinction striking the strings of my very life-vein.
Tu Jo Asrar-e-Haqiqat Kahin Zahir Kar De
Abhi Bedam Rasan-o-Daar Ka Saaman Ho Jaye
If You were to reveal the secrets of Reality anywhere, O Bedam;
The preparations for the noose and the gallows would be made instantly.
