“Tere Ishq Ki Inteha Chahta Hun” (I wish to attain the limits of Your love) is one of the most powerful and insightful couplets by the Poet of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal. It is a profound Ghazal and Hamd expressing the spiritual audacity and deep longing of a seeker for divine proximity.
Tere Ishq ki Inteha Chahta Hun
Meri Sadgi dekh mein kia chahta Hun
I seek the ultimate limit of Your love,
Look at my simplicity—what a monumental thing I ask for!
Sitam Ho Ke Ho Wada e BeHijabi
Koi Baat Sabr Azma Chahta Hun
Be it trials (Sitam) or the promise of unveiling (Direct Vision),
I seek a condition that puts my patience to the ultimate test.
Ye Jannat Mubarik Rahe Zahidon Ko
Ke Mein Aap Ka Samna Chahta Hun
Let this Paradise be for the ascetics/zahids,
For I desire nothing less than a face-to-face meeting with You.
Zara Sa Tu Dil Houn Magar Shokh Itna
Wohi Lan Tarani Suna Chahta Hun
I am just a tiny heart, but so bold (shokh),
I wish to hear that same response: “You shall never see Me.”
Bhari Bazm Mein Raaz Ki Baat Keh Di
Bara Be-Adab Hun, Saza Chahta Hun
I have spoken the secret in a crowded assembly,
I have been insolent, and now I seek my punishment.
Koi Dam Ka Mehman Hun Ae Ahl e Mehfil
Charagh e Sehar Hun, Bujha Chahta Hun
I am a guest of but a moment, O people of the gathering,
Like the morning lamp, I am ready to be extinguished.
