“Nishan Yahi Hai Zamane Mein Zinda Qoumon Ka” is a masterpiece by Allama Muhammad Iqbal. In this poem, Iqbal defines the character of a “living nation”—one that creates its own destiny, lives with sincerity, and possesses the majesty of Khudi (Selfhood).
نشان یہی ہے زمانے میں زندہ قوموں کا
کہ صبح و شام بدلتی ہیں ان کی تقدیریں
Nishan Yahi Hai Zamane Mein Zinda Qoumon Ka
Ke Subha O Sham Badalti Hain In Ki Taqdeerain
زندہ قوموں کی پہچان یہ ہے کہ ان کی تقدیریں مسلسل بدلتی رہتی ہیں
(وہ اپنی حالت بدلنے کے لیے ہمیشہ کوشاں رہتے ہیں)
This alone is the sign of living nations in this world:
That their destinies change with every passing dawn and dusk.
کمالِ صدق و مروت ہے زندگی ان کی
معاف کرتی ہے فطرت بھی ان کی تقصیریں
Kamal-E-Sidq-O-Marawwat Hai Zindagi In Ki
Maaf Karti Hai Fitrat Bhi In Ki Taqseerain
ان کی زندگی سچائی اور مروت کا اعلیٰ نمونہ ہوتی ہے
ان کی عظمت کی وجہ سے قدرت بھی ان کی خطاؤں کو معاف کر دیتی ہے
Their lives are a perfection of truth and generosity;
Even Nature overlooks and forgives their shortcomings.
قلندرانہ ادائیں، سکندرانہ جلال
یہ اُمتیں ہیں جہاں میں برہنہ شمشیریں
Qalanderana Ada’en, Sikandarana Jalal
Ye Ummatain Hain Jahan Mein Barhana Shamsheerain
ان کا انداز درویشانہ ہے مگر جلال بادشاہوں جیسا
یہ قومیں دنیا میں میان سے نکلی ہوئی تلواروں کی مانند ہیں
With the grace of a dervish and the majesty of Alexander;
Such nations are like naked swords in the theater of the world.
خودی سے مردِ خود آگاہ کا جمال و جلال
کہ یہ کتا ب ہے، باقی تمام تفسیریں
Khudi Se Mard-E-Khud Agah Ka Jamal-O-Jalal
Ke Ye Kitab Hai, Baqi Tamam Tafseerain
خود آگاہ انسان کی خوبصورتی اور دبدبہ “خودی” سے ہے
خودی اصل کتاب ہے، اور کائنات کی ہر شے اس کی تشریح ہے
The beauty and power of a self-aware man spring from Khudi;
Khudi is the original text; all else is but a commentary.
شکوہِ عید کا منکر نہیں ہوں میں، لیکن
قبولِ حق ہیں فقط مردِ حُر کی تکبیریں
Shikoh-E-Eid Ka Munkir Nahin Hun Mein, Lekin
Qabool-E-Haq Hain Faqat Mard-E-Hur Ki Takbeerain
میں عید کی رونق اور شوکت کا انکار نہیں کرتا، مگر
خدا کی بارگاہ میں صرف آزاد انسان کی پکار ہی قبول ہوتی ہے
I do not deny the outward splendor of the Eid celebration;
But only the prayers of a free man are truly accepted by Truth.
حکیم میری نواؤں کا راز کیا جانے
ورائے عقل ہیں اھلِ جنوں کی تدبیریں
Hakeem Meri Nawa’on Ka Raaz Kya Jane
Wara’ay Aqal Hain Ahl-E-Junoon Ki Tadbeerain
فلسفی یا عقل پرست میری باتوں کی گہرائی نہیں سمجھ سکتا
عشق والوں کے فیصلے عقل کی حدوں سے باہر ہوتے ہیں
How can a mere philosopher grasp the secret of my songs?
The strategies of those possessed by love are far beyond the reach of logic.
