“Aj Sik Mitran Di Vadheri Ye” is a legendary Punjabi Naat authored by the great saint of Golra Sharif, Pir Mehr Ali Shah. Written in an ecstatic state of longing for the Holy Prophet ﷺ, this Kalam is a supreme example of Tasmee (linguistic blending), weaving Arabic and Persian into a Pothohari Punjabi base. It captures the peak of Ishq-e-Rasool, where the physical beauty of the Beloved is described as the ultimate manifestation of Divine Light. This masterpiece serves as a spiritual bridge, echoing the same “Vision of Beauty” found in the works of other legendary masters on our platform.
Aj sik mitran di vadheri ye
Kyun dilri udaas ghaneri ye
Loon loon vich shauq chingeri ye
Aj nainan laiyan kyun jhariyan
Today, the longing for the Beloved is overwhelming
Why is this little heart so profoundly sad?
In every fiber of my being is a spark of desire
Why have my eyes begun to rain like a storm today?
At-taifu sara min tal-atihi
Wash-shaz-o-bada min wafratihi
Fasakirtu huna min nazratihi
Nainan diyan faujan sar chariyan
A vision appeared from His radiance
A musk-like fragrance came from His tresses
I became intoxicated right there by His glance
The armies of His eyes have conquered me
Mukh chand badr shashani ye
Mathe chamakdi laat noorani ye
Kaali zulf te akh mastani ye
Makhmur akheen hun madh bhariyan
His face is like the radiant full moon
On His forehead shines a luminous flame
Black are His locks and dreamy His eyes
Those dreamy eyes are filled with Divine wine
Do abru qaus misaal dissan
Jain teen nok mizha de teer chutan
Labaan surkh aakhan ke laal-e-yaman
Chittay dand moti diyan han lariyan
His eyebrows are like bows in appearance
From which arrows of eyelashes are released
Are His lips red or are they Yemeni rubies?
His white teeth are like strings of pearls
Is surat noon main jaan aakhan
Janan ke jaan-e-jahan aakhan
Sach aakhan te Rab di shaan aakhan
Jis shaan ton shaanan sab baniyan
Shall I call this countenance my very life?
My beloved, or the soul of the entire world?
If I speak truth, I call it the Glory of God
From which all other glories were created
Ay surat hai bay-surat teen
Bay-surat zahir surat teen
Bay-rang dissay is moorat teen
Vich wahdat phatiyan jad ghariyan
This form has come from the Formless
The Formless has manifested through this form
The Colorless is seen through this image
Since the moment Unity blossomed forth
Dassay surat raah bay-surat da
Tauba raah ki ain haqiqat da
Par kamm nahi bay-sujhat da
Koi wirliyan moti lay tariyan
This face shows the path to the Formless
Indeed, it is the path of the ultimate Truth
But this is not for those without insight
Only a rare few have gathered these pearls
Aiha surat shaala paish-e-nazar
Rahay waqt-e-naza te roz-e-hashr
Vich qabr te pul teen jad hosi guzar
Sab khotiyan teen san tad khariyan
May this face stay before my eyes
At the hour of death and on Judgement Day
In the grave and when passing the Bridge
The counterfeit shall become pure by this sight
Yu’teeka Rabbuka daas tasaan
Fatarza teen poori aas asaan
Lajpal karesi paas asaan
Washfa tushaffa sahi parhiyan
Your Lord shall give to You abundantly
In Your pleasure lies our complete hope
The Protector will keep us near Him
‘Intercede and be accepted’ we have read truly
Laho mukh ton mukhatat burd-e-yaman
Mun bhanvri jhalak dikhlao sajan
Oha mithiyan gaaleen alao mitha
Jo hamra waadi san kariyan
Lift the Yemeni cloak from Your face
Show me Your heart-ravishing glimpse, O Friend
Speak those sweet words again, my Beloved
Which were spoken in the Hamra valley
Hujray ton masjid aao dholan
Noori jhaat de kaaran saaray sikkan
Do jug akhiyan raah da farsh karan
Sab ins o malak hooraan pariyan
Come from the chamber to the mosque, O Love
Everyone yearns for one radiant glimpse
Both worlds pave the path with their eyes
All humans, angels, and houris are waiting
Inna sikkdiyaan te kurlandiyaan te
Lakh waari sadqay jandiyaan te
Inna bardiyaan muft vikandiyaan te
Shaala aawan wat vi oh ghariyan
Upon these yearning and crying souls
Who sacrifice themselves a million times
Upon these slaves who sell themselves for free
Would that those moments return again!
Subhan Allah ma ajmalaka
Ma ahsanaka ma akmalaka
Kithe Mehr Ali kithe teri sana
Gustakh akheen kithe ja ariyan
Glory be to Allah! How beautiful You are!
How excellent You are! How perfect You are!
Where is Mehr Ali and where is Your praise?
Where have these audacious eyes dared to look?
