Ae Ke Bashi Dar Pe Kasb e Uloom
This masterpiece from Allama Iqbal’s Asrar-e-Khudi narrates the life-changing encounter between Maulana Rumi and his mentor, Shams Tabrizi. Legend has it that when Shams first met Rumi, he threw Rumi’s valuable manuscripts into a pond. When Rumi reacted with anger, Shams pulled the books out of the water perfectly dry. This Karamat taught Rumi that true spiritual wisdom comes from Ishq (Divine Love) rather than mere Aql (Intellectual Study). Iqbal uses this narrative to emphasize that while books provide information, only the heart provides transformation.

اےکہ تو علم حاصل کرنے میں مصروف ہے
کیا تو نے پیر روم کا پیغام بھی سنا ہے
O you who are busy in the pursuit of knowledge
I convey to you the message of the Sage of Rum
علم را بر تن زنی مارے بود
علم را بر دل زنی یارے بود
Ilm Ra Bar Tan Zani Maarey Buwad
Ilm Ra Bar Dil Zani Yaarey Buwad
علم کو اگر بدن پر لگایا جائے تو یہ سانپ بن جاتا ہے
لیکن علم کو اگر دل سے جوڑا جائے تو یہ یار بن جاتا ہے
Knowledge applied to the body becomes a snake
Knowledge applied to the heart becomes a friend
آگہی از قصہ اخوند روم
آں کہ داد اندر حلب درس علوم

AaN Ke Daad Andar Halab Dars-e-Uloom
تو مولاناروم کے قصے سے تو واقف ہے
وہ جو روم کہ شہر حلب میں علوم کا درس دیا کرتے تھے

پائے در زنجیر توجیہات عقل
کشتیش طوفانی طلمات عقل
Paye Dar Zanjeer-e-Tojeehat-e-Aql
Kashtiyash Toofani-e-Zulmat-e-Aql
اُن کے پاؤں عقل کی زنجیروں میں جکڑے ہوئے تھے
اُن کی کشتی عقل کی تاریکیوں اور طوفانوں میں گھری ہوئی تھی
His feet were bound in the chains of logic
His boat was tossed in the storms of intellectual darkness
از تشکک گفت و از اشراق گفت
وز حکم صد گوہر تابندہ سفت
Az Tashakkuk Guft Wa Az Ishraq Guft
Waz Hikam Sad Gohar-e-Tabinda Suft
وہ تشکک اور اشراق جیسے فلسفہ کے موضوعات پر گفتگو فرماتے
علوم کے موتی پروتے اور اس کے حصول پر زور دیتے تھے
He spoke of doubt and of enlightenment
And pierced a hundred brilliant pearls of wisdom
گرد و پیشش بود انبار کتب
بر لب او شرح اسرار کتب
Gird-o-Peshash Buwad Anbar-e-Kutub
Bar Lab-e-Oo Sharh-e-Asrar-e-Kutub
اُن کے گرد ہر وقت کتابوں کا ڈھیر ہوتا
ان کے ہونٹوں پر ہر وقت کتابوں کی تشریحات ہوتیں تھیں
He was surrounded by piles of books at all times
While his lips explained the hidden secrets of texts
گفت “ایں غوغا و قیل و قال چیست
ایں قیاس و وہم و استدلال چیست؟”
Guft “EeN Ghogha Wa Qeel-o-Qaal Cheest
EeN Qiyas Wa Wahm Wa Istidlal Cheest?”
شمس نے پوچھا کہ یہ شورو شرابہ اور بحث کیا ہے؟
یہ وہم و قیاس اور منطقی استدلال کیا ہے؟
Shams asked, “What is this noise and debate?
What is this logic, doubt, and reasoning?”
مولوی فرمود “ناداں لب بہ بند
بر ملاقات خرد منداں مخند”
Molvi Farmood “NadaN Lab Ba Band
Bar Mulaqat-e-Khirad MandaN Makhand”
مولانا روم نے کہا کہ اے نادان خاموش ہو جا
تو عقل مندوں کی گفتگو کا مذاق نہ اُڑا
The Molvi replied, “O ignorant one, be silent!
Do not laugh at the discourse of the wise”
آتش دل خرمن ادراک سوخت
دفتر آں فلسفی را پاک سوخت
Aatish-e-Dil Kharman-e-Idrak Sokht
Daftar-e-AaN Falsafi Ra Paak Sokht
دل کی آگ نے عقل و ادراک کے کھلیان کو جلا دیا
اس فلسفی کا دفتر جل کر راکھ ہو گیا
The heart’s fire burned the harvest of logic
It completely consumed the library of that philosopher
گفت شیخ اے مسلم زنار دار
ذوق و حال است ایں ترا باوے چہ کار
Guft Sheikh Ae Muslim-e-Zunnar Dar
Zauq-o-Haal Ast EeN Tra Ba-Way Che Kaar
شمس بولے کہ اے بظاہر مسلم مگر عملا انکاری
یہ ذوق و حال کی بات ہے، تیرا اس سے کیا لینا دینا
The Sheikh said: “O Muslim with a pagan thread
This is ecstatic passion; it is beyond your reach”
مولوی ہرگز نہ شد مولائے روم
تا غلام شمس تبریزی نہ شد
Molvi Hargiz Na Shud Maula-e-Room
Ta Ghulam-e-Shams Tabrezi Na Shud
مولانا روم اپنے بارے میں کہتے ہیں کہ میں فقط ایک مولوی تھا
مگر جب حضرت شمس تبریزی کا غلام ہوا تو ‘روم کا مولا’ بن گیا
A simple Molvi could never have become the Great Master of Rum
Had he not become the humble servant of Shams Tabrizi
