“Na Chehro Khiyal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun” is a soulful expression of spiritual immersion by Khawar Soharwardy. The poem captures the state of Istighraq—a deep meditative absorption where the lover becomes oblivious to the self and the surroundings, finding peace only in the thoughts of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). This theme of absolute focus on the Beloved mirrors the “Bekhudi” often found in the works of Bedam Shah Warsi.
Thematic Connections: Spiritual Absorption
The state of being ‘lost’ in the Prophet’s (ﷺ) thought is a recurring treasure in Sufi poetry:
نہ چھیڑو خیالِ محمد میں گم ہوں
بہ ایں رخ وصالِ محمد میں گم ہوں
Na Chehro Khiyal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Ba-Een Rukh Visal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Do not disturb me, for I am lost in the thought of Muhammad (ﷺ)
In this very state, I am lost in the union with Muhammad (ﷺ).
Hama Vasf Mousoof Noor-um-Min Allah
Jalal-o-Jamal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Possessing every attribute, a Light from Allah
I am lost in the majesty and beauty of Muhammad (ﷺ).
Ameenay, Hakime-nay, Rahime-nay, Karime-nay
Hamee Khush Khasal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
The Trustworthy, the Wise, the Merciful, the Generous
In these beautiful traits of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Sada Naat Goyee, Sada Naat Khwani
Sada Qeel-o-Qaal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Forever reciting Naat, forever composing Naat
Forever lost in the discourse and mention of Muhammad (ﷺ).
Hama Aftab-am, Maha Mahtab-am
Ke Husn-o-Jamal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
He is my entire Sun, He is my great Moon
For in the grace and beauty of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Na Hangam-e-Masti Na Een Hoshiyari
Ghulaaman-e-Aal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Neither in the time of ecstasy nor in this sobriety
Among the servants of the Family of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Meray Haal-e-Zahir Hi Ae Hansne-Walo
Dareen Haal, Qaal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
O you who laugh at my outward condition!
Even in this state, I am lost in the word of Muhammad (ﷺ).
Sarapa Muhammad Ke Naqsh-e-Qadam Par
Sarapa Maal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
Entirely upon the footprints of Muhammad (ﷺ)
Entirely in the heritage of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Dama Dam Naye Walwalay Zindagi Ke
Ke Daaim Khiyal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
With every breath, new passions for life arise
Because forever, in the thought of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Haqaiq Ka Irfaan, Ma-arif Ka Toofaan
Ke Jaam-e-Sufaal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
The gnosis of realities, a storm of deep wisdom
For in the humble clay-cup of Muhammad (ﷺ), I am lost.
Hai Mahshar Mein Har Koyi Pursish Pe Larzaan
Magar Main Khiyal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
On the Day of Judgment, everyone trembles at the questioning
But I am lost in the thought of Muhammad (ﷺ).
Khusha Bakht Khawar Qalandar Ke Sadqay
Main Qurb-o-Visal-e-Muhammad Main Gum Hun
How blessed is the fate of Khawar, by the grace of the Qalandar!
I am lost in the nearness and union of Muhammad (ﷺ).
Insight: The Station of Istighraq
In Sufi metaphysics, Istighraq refers to a state of total immersion where the seeker’s consciousness is completely occupied by the object of their love. Khawar Soharwardy describes a state where even the terrors of Mahshar (Judgment Day) cannot break the contemplation of the Prophet (ﷺ).
The mention of the Jaam-e-Sufaal (clay cup) is a beautiful metaphor for humility. It suggests that even the simplest association with the Prophet (ﷺ) contains a “storm” of Divine knowledge. This poem also reinforces the Hayat-un-Nabi belief, as the poet experiences Visal (union) and conversation in the present moment, rather than as a distant historical memory.
