“Sona Jungle Raat Andheri Chai Badli Kaali Hai” is perhaps the most profound allegorical Naat written by Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Alahazrat). In these 15 verses, he depicts the human life as a journey through a dark, predator-filled forest, where the only hope for a helpless traveler is the guidance and protection of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
سونا جنگل رات اندھیری چھائی بدلی کالی ہے
سونے والوں جاگتے رہیو چوروں سے رکھوالی ہے

The forest is desolate, the night is dark, and black clouds have gathered;
O sleepers! Stay awake, for you must guard against the thieves.
آنکھ سے کاجل صاف چرا لیں یاں وہ چور بلا کے ہیں
تیری گٹھری تاکی ہے اور تو نے نیند نکالی ہے
Ankh Se Kaajal Saaf Chura Lein Yaan Woh Chor Bala Ke Hain
Teri Gathri Taaki Hai Aur Tu Ne Neend Nikaali Hai
These thieves are so cunning, they could steal the kohl right from your eyes;
They have their eyes on your bundle (of faith), yet you have surrendered to sleep.
یہ جو تجھ کو بلاتا ہے یہ ٹھگ ہے مار ہی رکھے گا
ہائے مسافر دم میں نہ آنا مت کیسی متوالی ہے
Yeh Jo Tujh Ko Bulata Hai Yeh Thug Hai Maar Hi Rakkhe Ga
Haaye Musafir Dam Mein Na Aana Mat Kaisi Matwali Hai
The one calling out to you is a swindler; he will surely strike you down;
Alas, O traveler! Do not be deceived, for your intellect has become intoxicated.
سونا پاس ہے سونا بن ہے سونا زہر ہے اُٹھ پیارے
تو کہتا ہے میٹھی نیند ہے تیری مت ہی نرالی ہے
Sona Paas Hai Sona Bun Hai Sona Zehr Hai Uth Pyaare
Tu Kehta Hai Meethi Neend Hai Teri Mat Hi Nirali Hai
You carry gold (faith), the forest is empty, and to sleep is poison—wake up, dear one!
You call this “sweet sleep,” but your logic is truly strange.
آنکھیں ملنا جھنجلا پڑنا لاکھوں جمائی انگڑائی
نام پر اُٹھنے کے لڑتا ہے اٹھنا بھی کوئی گالی ہے
Ankhein Malna Jhun jila Padna Lakhon Jamayi Angdayi
Naam Par Uthne Ke Ladta Hai Uthna Bhi Koi Gaali Hai
Rubbing eyes, acting irritated, yawning and stretching endlessly;
You pick a fight at the mention of standing—is being told to “stand” an insult?
جگنو چمکے پتا کھڑکے مجھ تنہا کا دل دھڑکے
ڈر سمجھائے کوئی پون ہے یا اگیابیتالی ہے
Jugnu Chamke Patta Kharke Mujh Tanha Ka Dil Dharke
Dar Samjhaye Koi Pavan Hai Ya Agiya-Baitali Hai
Fireflies flicker and leaves rustle; my lonely heart throbs with fear;
Fear whispers to me: Is it just the wind, or a haunting phantom?
بادل گرجے بجلی چمکے دھک سے کلیجہ ہو جائے
بن میں گھٹا کی بھیانک صورت کیسی کالی کالی ہے
Baadal Garje Bijli Chamke Dhak Se Kaleja Ho Jaaye
Ban Mein Ghata Ki Bhayanak Surat Kaisi Kaali Kaali Hai
The thunder roars, the lightning strikes, and my heart leaps in terror;
How terrifying is the sight of the storm clouds in this dark forest!
پاؤں اٹھا اور ٹھوکر کھائی کچھ سنبھلا پھر اوندھے منہ
مینہ نے پھسلن کردی ہے اور دھڑ تک کھائی نالی ہے
Paon Uthaya Aur Thokar Khaayi Kuch Sambhla Phir Ondhe Munh
Meenh Ne Phislan Kardi Hai Aur Dhad Tak Khaayi Naali Hai
I raised my foot and stumbled; I regained balance only to fall face-down;
The rain has made it slippery, and the ravines are dangerously deep.
ساتھی کہہ کے پکاروں ساتھی ہو تو جواب آئے
پھر جھنجلا کر سردے پٹکوں چل رے مولی والی ہے
Saathi Keh Ke Pukarun Saathi Ho To Jawab Aaye
Phir Jhunjhla Kar Sar De Patkun Chal Re Mauly Waali Hai
I cry out “Companion!” but there is no reply to be heard;
In frustration, I strike my head and say, “Keep moving, trust only in the Lord.”
پھر پھر کر ہر جانب دیکھوں کوئی آس نہ پاس کہیں
ہاں اک ٹوٹی آس نے ہارے جی سے رفاقت پالی ہے
Phir Phir Kar Har Jaanib Dekhun Koi Aas Na Paas Kahin
Haan Ik Tooti Aas Ne Haare Jee Se Rafaqat Paali Hai
I look around repeatedly in every direction, but find no hope nearby;
Only a shattered expectation remains a companion to my weary soul.
تم تو چاند عرب کے ہو پیارے تم تو عجم کے سورج ہو
دیکھو مجھ بیکس پر شب نے کیسی آفت ڈالی ہے
Tum To Chaand Arab Ke Ho Pyaare Tum To Ajam Ke Suraj Ho
Dekho Mujh Bekas Par Shab Ne Kaisi Aafat Daali Hai
You are the Moon of Arabia, my Beloved; You are the Sun of the Non-Arab world;
Look at my helpless state; see what calamity the night has brought upon me!
دنیا کو تو کیا جانےیہ بس کی گانٹھ ہے حرافہ
صورت دیکھو ظالم کی تو کیسی بھولی بھالی ہے
Dunya Ko Tu Kia Jaane Yeh Bis Ki Gaanth Hai Harrafa
Surat Dekho Zaalim Ki To Kaisi Bholi Bhaali Hai
What do you know of this world? It is a knot of poison, a cunning deceiver;
Look at the face of this tyrant—how innocent and naive she appears!
شہد دکھائے زہر پلائے قاتل ڈائن شوہر کش
اس مردار پہ کیا للچانا دنیا دیکھی بھالی ہے
Shehd Dikhaye Zehr Pilaye Qaatil Daayan Shohar Kush
Is Murdaar Pe Kia Lalchana Dunya Dekhi Bhaali Hai
She shows honey but serves poison; a murderous witch who kills her own suitors;
Why covet this carcass? We have seen the true reality of this world.
وہ تو نہایت سستا سودا بیچ رہے ہیں جنت کا
ہم مفلس کیا مول چکائیں اپنا ہاتھ ہی خالی ہے
Woh To Nihayat Sasta Sauda Bech Rahe Hain Jannat Ka
Hum Muflis Kia Mol Chukayein Apna Haath Hi Khaali Hai
He ﷺ is offering the trade of Paradise at such a low price;
But how can we paupers pay the cost when our hands are completely empty?
مولیٰ تیرے عفو و کرم ہوں میرے گواہ صفائی کے
ورنہ رضا سے چور پہ تیری ڈگری تو اقبالی ہے
Maula Tere Afw-o-Karam Hon Mere Gawah Safayi Ke
Warna Raza Se Chor Pe Teri Degree To Iqbal-i Hai
O Lord! Let Your mercy and grace be the witnesses of my innocence;
Otherwise, against this thief “Raza,” the verdict of guilt is already confessed.
